History
A 25 year old male resents with a painful right eye with reduced vision. No trauma to eye.
Examination shows vitreous opacities.
A diagnostic vitrectomy is done.
Questions
- Figures 1 and 2 are sections of the vitrectomy specimen. What are the ovoid structures indicated by the arrows?
- What do the silver stains show (Figs 3 and 4)?

- These are granulomas.
- Silver stain showing ‘bangers and beans’ hyphae and spores.
- Candida endogenous endophthalmitis (culture positive). In this case, only one granuloma contained the candida, after examining many levels.
